The importance of the "Original Kings of Comedy" film.

Comedy tours come and go pretty often, great comedy tours are a rare but fantistic event. The "Original Kings of Comedy" was great and is probably the best known comedy tour of the last 15 to 20 years. The event of Steve Harvey,D.L.Hugely,Cedric the Entertainer, and Bernie Mac(r.i.p.) was a show that I thought really brought stand-up back into the publics eye. Spike Lee is to be credited with making a unbelievable film and bringing stand-up to a huge audience of which many probably have never even been to a stand-up show. The closest most people had to ever watching stand-up at the time was the t.v. show Seinfeld untill "OKC" hit in 2000.

Spike Lee made a movie showing everyone not only how funny these guys were but how fun it was to go see stand-up's live. Before "OKC' you would see a few half hour comedy specials on Comedy Central,HBO,or Showtime but usually those were few and far between. Since "OKC" in 2000 you have seen not only stand-up take off but Comedy Central has benefited greatly. Comedy Central has many more stand-up half hour specials that not only feature the "big" names in standup, but also the "lesser" know comedians that are making a name for themselfs. Most notably is probably "The Blue CollarComedy Tour" which may never even had happen if not for the huge success of the Orginial Kings of Comedy and the wide audience that it reached.

The Orginial Kings of Comedy did a lot for film and comedy. The films stars went on to become huge success in not only stand-up but in other media outlets. I can only hope with its success and the success of other comedy tours such as "The Blue Collar Comedy","Latin Kings of Comedy", and "The Queens of Comedy" that stand-up will continue to be as popular as it's ever been. I urge if you have never been to a comedy club please go and see it how much better it is in person than it is watching on tv.,not only will you have the time of your life but it will keep comedy strong.

What makes a great comedian?

What makes a great comedian? Well for starters stage presence is a big one that sometimes people dismiss or doesnt even consider. Take Richard Pryor for instance,he was a great comedian because you never even had to hear the joke to get it. His presence on stage was magic as he told jokes not just with his words but with his whole body. One of the greatest "bits" ever was his take on catching himself on fire smoking crack. Anyone can watch that with bit without hearing the story and know its good!

What makes a great comedian? Intelligence. A comedian  that can begin a joke and then at the punch line, take it in a totally different direction then you were expecting. One comedian that I think is great at this is Louie C.K. He can begin a story and at the end your in a totlly different place and its never the obvious place you were expecting. Thats why great stand up comedians are difficult to find. Anyone can get on stage and do "obvious" boring jokes that you know the punch line before its ever delivered. A true master of this becomesa lenged in the likes of George Carlin and Andy Kaufman.

What makes a great comedian? Style of humor. Lets face it not everyone finds the same things funny. I may find a joke about retardation hilarius when others are offended by it. Thats why stand up is so great, you can go watch Jim Norton and either love him or be terrified of him just as I could go see Jeff Dunham and his puppets and fall asleep its so boring to me. There is a stand up with the kind of humor that no matter what you find funny they are out there doing it night after night.

What makes a great comedian? I guess after doing this post I realized that the fans is what makes a great comedian. Whatever your humor, its out there being performed by someone because they love it even more than you. Comedians out there night after night doing their shows putting the time and work to make their craft their own is something to be admired. I love stand up and always will, but I realize that I dont have the talent or the amazing strength to endure all the shit they have to go thru so they "might" make it some day. So whats the point of all this? Fuck if I know.

Whats this page about?

I created this page just as a way stand up and improv fans can come and discuss their favorite comedians and improv skits or shows. I will probably have updates on alot of my personal favorite comedians such as Jim Norton,Patrice O'Neal,Bill Burr,Rich Vos and other stand up's of this type. I perfer the more "blue" or "dirty" comedians but appreciate all kinds of stand up and improv. If I receive any information on events I will be sure to add them on the page. Thanks for stopping by and feel free to leave comments good or bad.
